KIEV (Reuters) - An ally of Ukraine's Viktor Yanukovich said the opposition leader led Sunday's presidential race, according to a count carried out by his party officials at polling stations.

Borys Kolesnikov, deputy head of Yanukovich's Regions Party, said after 82 percent of the vote counted he led bitter rival Yulia Tymoshenko by 4.5 percent. He did not give precise figures.

Earlier, Tymoshenko's camp said the race was at a dead heat according to a count it was conducting. The representatives of both sides are present at polling stations and have access to ballots because they must sign off results.
